Arts Department Philosophy
At Lakeside, we believe the arts are for everyone. Our program seeks to guide students of varied backgrounds and experiences to develop as creative individuals. We teach artistic techniques for the purpose of self-expression, creative problem-solving, and the development of critical-thinking skills through reflection on the artistic process.

This process requires a directed and sustained effort in the classroom by the student, the instructor, and the collaborative group. Artistic practices teach patience, self-discipline, and build confidence through supported risk-taking.

“Preparation in the arts will be valuable to college entrants whatever their intended field of study. The actual practice of the arts can engage the imagination, foster flexible ways of thinking, develop disciplined effort, and build self-confidence.” – College Entrance Board, New York
